Morality Through Music

Several months ago, my teammate Chris approached me about the possibility of teaching a class on morality and values at our music school. I was intrigued by the possibility, but the thought of developing a curriculum from scratch was overwhelming. I politely declined. In the ensuing months, I occasionally thought about the class and felt convicted that it was something we needed to do. But each time I felt the same reservations.

Our music school, Peace Music Academy, was founded for the specific purpose of providing our team with opportunities to minister to the community and develop friendships. A class teaching values and Christian morals through music seemed like a perfect way to plant seeds of biblical principles. After months of Spirit promptings, I finally decided to develop the curriculum with the help of my wife and several teammates.

We began advertising the class to the families of our students. One family asked if their girls could attend the first class before committing, and we agreed. During the first class, as we sang songs, played games and told stories about honesty, I felt excited about the future and prayed that God would touch the hearts of our students and their families. As we finished our last activity and said goodbye, we reminded the family that they were free to decide whether or not to continue. The father told us they would talk to their girls at home and let us know if they wanted to continue studying. Before he could finish his sentence, his youngest daughter piped up enthusiastically, “Rian!” (“Study!”).
Please pray for us as we seek to sow gospel seeds through creative outreach at our school.
